North Rhine-Westphalia Trip

Recently spent a few days in Gütersloh visiting the fine chaps at arvato, a subsidiary of Bertelsmann.

How does one get to Gütersloh? Ideally a military plane will take you straight to the large British base there. Failing this, the nearest major cities are Düsseldorf, Hannover or Dortmund. Air Berlin also flies to Paderborn, which is quite close. Generally though, one must fly then hire a car.

It turned out that arvato's address really was "An der Autobahn" - this is the street name - I had always assumed it was a spoof address! The logic is that they are just off the A2 autobahn.

We stayed in Rietberg, a historic and pretty town that has won awards for being more of a garden than a town.

Town Hall

The Ems River

Lind Hotel an der Ems is in line with the town, looking like a Swiss alpine lodge, backing on to the Ems river and having fantastic food. My only complaint was that the traffic noise from the light industry in the area seemed to start up very early in the morning - definitely asking for a room at the back of the hotel next stay!

Graham and I managed a couple of Run Clubs whilst out there, along a really pleasant route by the river. Updated map to follow:

We'd run past this

And along here!

Proper photos next time when I take my new camera!
